According to the newly released "2024 Happiness Cities Index" report, Brisbane, Australia, has been ranked as one of the happiest cities in the world (ranked 37th), alongside major European cities such as Copenhagen, Zurich, and Berlin. The index assesses the performance of cities worldwide in a variety of areas, including education, inclusive policies, economy, mobility, environmental protection, and green space, and emphasizes the direct impact of these factors on citizens' quality of life.
Brisbane was the only Australian city to make the top 37, receiving a gold rating. Brisbane stood out for its exceptional public service quality and innovative solutions, demonstrating its local government's commitment to enhancing citizen well-being. The report noted that Brisbane performed well across multiple indicators, particularly in citizen satisfaction and governance. The city's pleasant weather, beautiful beaches, diverse culinary scene, and friendly cycling environment all contribute significantly to its citizens' well-being.
Besides Brisbane, other major Australian cities also performed well in the index. Melbourne, ranked 41st, received the Silver rating, acclaimed for its vibrant arts and cultural scene and rich educational resources, attracting a large number of young professionals and international students. Sydney, while falling out of the top 100, still received a Bronze rating at 116th. Known for its multiculturalism and strong economic foundation, Sydney is one of the core cities for Australia's economic development. Perth and Hobart ranked 61st and 87th, respectively, showcasing their advantages in high quality of life and low cost of living.
In addition, Christchurch, New Zealand's highest-ranked city, ranked 32nd and also received a gold rating.
The Happy Cities Index, published annually by the Quality of Life Institute, aims to recognize cities that are committed to improving citizen happiness and inspire governments worldwide to take more proactive measures to enhance the quality of life. The report emphasizes that the definition of a happy city varies from place to place, with each city possessing its own unique strengths and challenges. The Institute evaluates major global cities based on indicators in 24 different areas, including citizen satisfaction, governance, environmental protection, economy, and mobility.
