According to a new analysis by online health guide company Cleanbill, Australian residents' first-time dental charges can vary by more than $200 depending on the region. The analysis shows significant differences in first-time dental costs between different regions, even within the same city. The report, released last week (13th), found that first-time dental costs can vary by as much as $200 between local government areas just 30 minutes' drive apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Average cost of a first dental visit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Nationally, the average cost of a first visit to the dentist is about $297. However, in Mosman, on Sydney's lower north shore, the average cost of a first visit is about $429, while in Strathfield, about 20 kilometres east, the cost drops to $205. Cleanbill founder James Gillespie said a typical first visit to the dentist would include a standard examination and cleaning, and sometimes X-rays, which could result in a very high fee, with fees exceeding $300 in many areas of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Queensland's cheapest dentist also offers discounts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
According to the Cleanbill report, the average first-time dental visit fee in the ACT is about $364, the highest in Australia. In contrast, the average cost of a similar examination in Queensland is the lowest, about $279. In addition, to attract new customers, nearly a quarter of dental clinics offer discounts, bringing the average dental fee for new dental patients nationwide to $222.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
High cost of dental services<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Australian Dental Association (ADA) said dental clinics have high operating costs, similar to small hospitals or operating theatres, requiring expensive sterilisation equipment and high regulatory costs. According to the association's fee survey, from 2017 to 2022, the inflation rate increased by 14.51t\/3t, but dental fees only increased by 2.141t\/3t during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The public dental system is underfunded<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Currently, public dental funding only covers 30% of eligible individuals, while the vast majority of dental treatments remain provided by private dentists. Due to the high costs of private dentists, many people lack access to adequate dental care. To address this issue, a Senate committee has recommended that the government gradually expand Medicare or a similar basic oral health plan to achieve universal dental and oral health care. The government is considering several options to expand federal dental subsidies, including an uncapped universal dental program estimated to cost approximately $11.6 billion.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
